Here are some pictures and a video of someone getting branded. Basically, the branding is normally done in a tattoo studio using a small torch type device to permanently scar the flesh with the design. Once it is healed, the scarred flesh has a different texture and color than the skin around it causingthe design to be very visible.

When I hear the word branding, a hot iron with numbers jumps into my mind - or at least the "built Ford Tough" brand from TV commercials. But the branding of human flesh for art and design is not done that way normally.
Branding on humans is usually done with a tiny torch, following an inked pattern that was transferred onto the skin in a tattoo parlor, hopefully in sterile surroundings.
Branding was most often used historically to mark property, most often livestock but also sometimes human. It was also utilized as a method of marking or punishing criminals both in Europe and Asia, and as recently as the founding US Pilgrim fathers.
In modern day body art, the technique is being explored as a way of making a monochromatic, permanent skin design which is more organic in line and color than what is created by tattooing
Here are the different types of branding - Types of Branding
Strike Branding - this is where a branding iron is made, heated and then pressed against the skin. DO NOT USE ANYTHING MADE FOR BRANDING ANIMALS, WOOD OR FOOD UNLESS YOU WANT A GIGANTIC BLOB OF SCAR TISSUE.
Electro-Cautery Branding - this technique is done using a medical device originally designed to stop bleeding by sealing the bleeding blood vessels.
Direct Fire Branding - this method involves putting something in direct contact with the skin and lighting it on fire so that it leaves burns.
Usable Piercings - Some BodMod and piercing enthusiasts are trying to turn eyeglasses from geeky to trendy with their line of extreme pierced eyeglasses. No frames sitting on your nose here, nope, they are attached and pierced through the nose... Inventive for sure

Some woman actually got a tattoo from a man that came to her door selling tattoos... and, she got really sick from the nutty and stupid ordeal.
